Has anybody played with any of the modern (if any?) Ansi art tools?

    Any recomondations? suggestions?

    Thanks

PabloDraw seems impressive, but I can't draw worth a crap. I'm a huge ANSI Art fan and love art in general, but can't draw a stick figure.

I am using Pablo Draw on a 64bit version of Windows. I'll make splash screens with the wide brushes and then edit my screens using The Draw for text and font changes.

I'll have to take a look at that. I work mostly on OSX or Linux, but I see they have source available.

Try Rexpaint. It's a fantastic tool, and Grid Sage Games used it to make Cogmind, if you want to look up some screenshots.

I am using Moebius right now. Just for ansi text editing.

I don't recall getting Dotel's latest message however I do a lot of ansi and I use two the most for different reasons.

Pablo Draw due to it's incredible flexibility and ease of use when creating ansi's and needing to copy/move a highlighted section of ansi at a time to somewhere else on the screen. I also love it's 16colors server to view other peoples work, and lastly, like it's ease of switching canvas size for 132x37 ansi's, which my Mystic BBS supports.

As for it's limitations, which I'll get to quickly: reference images, mouse draw (that I've discovered) and doesn't do a good job saving without sauce.

Meobius, as mentioned by Matthew, is my other go to. What I like:
    1. You can select an option to "view referance images," and it will place any image file in the backdrop, so you can sketch out the basic outlines of an image you want to create. I use this when I'm dealing with tough angles that would normally take me forever to recreate.
    2. Mouse support. I can free draw using the mouse, which really speeds up the process, especially considering it blinks when color codes you've combined half blocks to don't match (Ice codes i think?) .. This lets me know to change a foreground/background color and or to manually change later. Pablo draw does not show the blinking.
    3. Saving without sauce is a breeze as it's a seperate option.
    4. Canvs width and height can be set to specific file widths and lengths.

What I don't like about it.
    1. The ANSI is very grainy, each block, compared to what you see on the BBS and or what you would see within pablo draw.
    2. While the move/copy block are very similar, I find the GUI to do so to be more clunky, if thats a word.
    3. If you were to make an ANSI logo, and then wanted to highlight the entire thing and change colors to explore the color you like best for it; I have not found a way to make this work without it changing both foreground and background. Not saying it can't do it, but it's not apparent within the menus.
    4. The reference image stretches to the canvas x/y you set. This is a problem for me when I want to make an 80x25, and no matter how small I make a .jpg, .gif, etc ... it will stretch the image to fill that space, therefore longer photos cut off rather then staying their original size. This requires me to cut and save longer or wider image files into chunks, and pull each one up, trace out the lines, then save. Pull them up in Pablo draw and combine them all into a single ansi image.

So, I have not found a perfect solution, but as an ANSI hobbiest, I have found that both combined create a really nice package that I can create drawings with.

    Hope this helps.
