Mesoscale Discussion 1024
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0900 PM CDT Sat Jun 19 2021
Areas affected...northwest/north-central KS...south-central NE
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 288...
Valid 200200Z - 200300Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 288
SUMMARY...The threat for significant severe winds will continue over
eastern portions of the watch area, and a downstream watch will be
needed prior to 0245z.
DISCUSSION...Latest reflectivity/velocity data from KGLD shows an
intense bowing line of severe thunderstorms moving east at 50 mph
across northwest KS and southwest NE. Several reports of severe
wind gusts have been received, including a measured gust to 84 mph
in Thomas County, KS. The downstream environment remains supportive
of a continued severe risk with strong instability (MUCAPE in excess
of 2500 J/kg), and around 35 kts of westerly effective shear.=20
Extrapolation of the current system movement would place the line at
the eastern edge of ww 288 by 03z/10 pm CDT, and thus a new Severe
Thunderstorm Watch will be needed prior to that time.
